I found this carving of a Dutch tax collector at the Maduwe Karang Temple in Bali, once a colonial outpost of the Dutch East Indies. Some two hundred years later a kind soul had adorned it with a Lotus flower. Hindus believe that within each human being is the spirit of the sacred Lotus, representing eternity, purity and divinity.
